HH Maharaja Gaekwad SAMARJITSINGHRAO GAEKWAD Sena Khas Khel Shamsher Bahadur Farzand-i-Khas-i-Daulat-i-Inglishia, 16th Maharaja of Baroda since 2012 (Laxmi Vilas Palace, Baroda – 390001, Gujarat, India). Born 25th April 1967, married 27th February 2002 in New Delhi, HH Maharani Radhikaraje Gaekwad, daughter of Maharajkumar Dr. Ranjitsinhji of Wankaner, and his wife, Maharajkumarani Kalpnakumari Ranjitsinhji Jhala. He has issue, two daughters:

  • Shrimant Maharajkumari Padmaja Raje Gaekwad, born at Delhi, 17th November 2006.
  • Shrimant Maharajkumari Narayani Raje Gaekwad, born at Delhi, 11th August 2008.

Short History

The Gaekwad family of Baroda first rose to prominence in 1720–21 when Damajirao Gaekwad obtained from Shahu Raja of Satara the exalted rank of Second-in-Command with the title of “Shamsher Bahadur”, or the Valiant Sword, for his bravery. Equally distinguished was his adopted son and successor, Pilajirao Gaekwad, who laid the foundation of the family’s dominions in Gujarat, with Baroda as the capital, ousting the Dhabari family.

                • Shrimant Lalsinh Rao Anand Rao Gaekwad, born 1892, educated at Oxon Christ Church (M.A.), was the GM Gaekwar Baroda State Railways and the Suba of Navasari (1937) and Mehasana (1934). He was also the Private Secretary to Maharani Chimnabai II and toured the Globe 7 times, married and had issue. He died 1968.

                • Shrimant Bhadrasinhrao alias Shanker Rao Anand Rao Gaekwad, born 1896, an illustrious Civil Servant of Baroda State, educated at Christ College Cambridge, he did his BAR in 1922, and started as a Probationer in Revenue Department under Maharaja Sayajirao III. Rose very fast in the Gaekwad Royal Bureaucracy and became Suba, Sar Suba and then Karma Sachiv. He was awarded the highest Merit in Civil Service of Baroda State, “Rajya Karya Dhurandhar” in 1942, awarded the C.I.E. in 1944, Dewan of Baroda 1945/1946, married and had issue, two sons. He died 20th May 1946.
                  • Shrimant Veersinhrao Gaekwad, educated at Christ Church College in Oxford (M.A.), died unmarried in 1991.
                  • Shrimant Gautamsinhrao Gaekwad, born 1936, educated in M.S. University (M.Sc. Botany), was a Professor in Faculty of Science, Botany Dept., till 1996. Remained Curator of Maharja Sayajirao Zoo for 25 yrs, has issue, one adopted son.
