Short History

The Rajas of Bonai share an agnatic descent with the rulers of Seraikella, Kharsawan and Rairakhol. The title of Tikait is the courtesy title of the heir-apparent, that of Patait is borne by the second son, that of Lal by the third son, and Babu by the younger sons. The state was ceded to the British Government in 1803 by the Treaty of Deogaon, with Raja Raghoji Bhonsle of Nagpur, to whom it was restored by a special engagement in 1806. It reverted to the British Government under the provisional agreement concluded with Madhoji Bhonsle in 1818, and was finally ceded by the treaty of 1826.
