Short History
The name Sirmur—more accurately pronounced Sarmour by the local population—is derived from two terms: sar (head) and maur (crown). Taken together, the expression may be interpreted as “a crown for the head.” It is likely that the state acquired this designation due to its former standing as the foremost among the hill states of the Punjab, some of which were, at one time, subject to its authority.
The early history of the State is closely associated with legend, particularly concerning Raja Madan Singh, who is believed to have ruled approximately nine centuries ago. He is said to have descended from the same lineage as the Rawal of Jaisalmer and thus belonged to the Chandravansh. During his reign, a flood in the Giri River destroyed the town of Sirmoor, claiming the lives of its residents, including the Raja and members of his household. With the town submerged and the ruling family lost, the State remained without governance for a period. Salivahan II, Rawal of Jaisalmer, happened to be in the vicinity of Sirmoor during this period. He was approached by a Rai Bhat (bard), who requested that one of his sons be sent to assume the vacant gaddi (throne). The Rawal agreed to this appeal and sent his third son, Hasso, accompanied by his wife, who was then with child, to Sirmur. Hasso, however, passed away en route at Sirhind. Despite her bereavement, his wife continued the journey and, upon reaching Poka near Sirmur Tal, gave birth to a son. The local population recognised the infant as their future Raja, and, at their earnest request, she consented to remain in the region. Later rulers, including Rajendra Prakash, asserted their descent from this same prince.
Following the death of Rajendra Prakash in 1964, without male issue and without having designated a successor, the headship of the Royal House remained vacant. On 17th March 2014, members of the Sirmur Royal Family and senior nobles of the former state convened in Jaipur and formally approached Rajmata Padmini Devi, requesting that her maternal grandson, Lakshraj Singh, be appointed to the vacant position. With the consent of his parents, Lakshraj Singh was initiated into the Attri gotra of the Sirmur Royal House on 13th April 2013. He was installed on the vacant throne of Sirmur at Nahan on 15th May 2013, under the name Lakshraj Prakash. As he was a minor at the time, Maharaj Ajay Bahadur Singh was appointed as his guardian.
