Present Head/Ruler

Indra Pratap Singh (1992-present), born 2nd July 1965, the 35th and present head of the family. He married Maharani Sarita Devi of Phoolpur (Basti) on 18th November 1992. He is a Law graduate and worked in U.P Sugar Corporation till 2010. He presently lives in Lucknow and takes care of the family property

Short History

Founded by Rao Takshah Singh descendant of Maharaj Hammir Dev Chauhan of Ranthambore, the rulers of Bhaddaiyan state of Awadh are direct descendants of Maharaja Prithviraj Chauhan. Being situated on one of the most prosperous regions of India, Maharajas of Bhaddaiyan were related to some of the greatest powers of their time be it the Mughals, Nawabs of Awadh, or the British, the Maharajas had prominent position in the court of them all. The Glory of the state came to an end after the great uprising on 1857 because of supporting the natives.

Predecessors

  • Agniraj Anhil, the warrior who came out of the fire according to the Agnikul theory. After the defeat of first 3 warriors, who later founded the Pratihara, Solanki and the Parmara dynasty, the 4th warrior was called from the fire. He is said to be the son of Agnidev, he defeated all the demons and was given the title of ‘AGNIRAJ’’ (supreme of the Agnivanshi clans) and this title became the family title of the Chauhans. According to Bhavishya Puran he had red eyes, jet fire like hair and 4 arms. Since he appeared after sacrificing 4 vedas, he was initially called Chauawahni which was later corrupted to Chauawahan, Chahaman and finally CHAUHAN.

  • Maharajadhiraj Khuranajondhakar Parambhattarak Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Arnoraj Chauhan, ruler of Ajmer. Ruled from 1133-1151. He inflicted a decisive defeat on the Muslim forces of Lahore near the city of Ajmer. He invaded Malwa, the region of Saraswati and Sindhu (Indus) and the area around present Bulandshahr. He was killed by his elder son Jugdeva. Married 1stly Kanchandevi, daughter of Jaisingh Siddhraj Chalukya, 2ndly Sudhawi, daughter of Marwar ruler of Avichi province and had issues.

    • Kunwar Kanhaddev, also known as Kaka Kanha, was a great warrior and served the Chauhan empire. Married and had issues.
      • Rajkumari Bela, married raja Pujandev of Amber (Jaipur). Her husband was killed in war with Kutubuddin and she became sati. There is a temple of Bela in Sambhal where a fair is organized every year.
      • Rajkumar Bhimdev, eldest son of Kanhaddev. Married and had issues.

        • Kumar Halade, faced Timur’s attack on Mandawar in which he was killed. His son became Muslim and was gifted with Mandawar in Jagir and Rao title.
        • Kumar (name unknown) went to Mainpuri. In war of Sanga with Babar at Khanwa the people from Mainpuri also came. After the war they settled in Mewar. These include Umrao’s of Sola, Bedla, Kotharia and Pasoli. Since they had come from the east so they were called Purviye.

    • Agniraj Someshwar (qv)
  • Maharajadhiraj Khuranajondhakar Parambhattarak Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Vigrahraj Chauhan IV (Bisaldeo) – Ruler of Ajmer and Delhi. Ruled from 1151-1163, known as the great conqueror, extended his empire in all 4 directions. He ascended to the throne after overthrowing his elder brother Jugdev who did so by killing his father Agniraj Arnoraj Chauhan. His major conquest was that of Delhi which was then under the rule of the Tomars. He assumed the title of Maharajadhiraj and Parmeshwar. A drama named Harikeli was written by him. He also established a Sanskrit university which was later converted in a mosque by Iltutmish. He also built the Bisal Deoji temple near Bisalpur, Rajasthan. Married and had issues.

    • Kunwar Nagarjuna, rebelled against the then Maharaj Prithviraj Chauhan III and captured Gudpura (Gurgaon). He was defeated. He fled away and his descendents are known as Raijada Chauhans.
  • Maharajadhiraj Khuranajondhakar Parambhattarak Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Amarangey Chauhan, ruled for a short period of time and died childless. He was succeeded by his cousin Prithviraj II.
  • Maharajadhiraj Khuranajondhakar Parambhattarak Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Prithviraj Chauhan II (Prithvibhat), defeated his cousin Agniraj Maharaj Amarangey and got to the throne. He defeated the king of Pinjor near Chandigarh. He gave villages to the Jaina temple of Parshvanatha at Bijolia. After his death without an issue the court appointed his uncle Someshwar the next Maharaj.
  • Maharajadhiraj Khuranajondhakar Parambhattarak Pratapalankeshwar Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Someshwar Chauhan (1169-1177), Ruler of Ajmer and Delhi. Son of Agniraj Maharaj Arnoraj Chauhan and brother of Agniraj Maharaj Vigrahraj Chauhan IV. He assumed the title of Pratapalankeshwar. He erected five temples of which one was dedicated to Tripurusha and another to Vaidyanath. He extended his empire to Gwalior, Kannauj and to Hissar and Sarhind in the west. He married Maharani Karpuridevi, daughter of Kalchuri king Narisimha or Gayakarna of Gujarat and had issues.

    • Rajkumari (name unknown), married Rawal Samar Singh of Mewar.
    • Kunwar Hariraj, on the death of Prithviraj Chauhan III, his son Govindraj was made ruler of Ajmer on the payment of a heavy tribute. Hariraj drove out Govindraj from Ajmer, and made himself the master of at least a fraction of his ancestral kingdom. He later seeing eminent defeat in the battle with the Sultanat forces sacrificed his life to fire.
  • Maharajadhiraj Khuranajondhakar Parambhattarak Pratapalankeshwar Parmeshwar Bharateshwar Samrat Agniraj Sri Prithviraj Chauhan III (Rai Pithora). The most famous ruler of the dynasty and one of the most celebrated warriors of India. He was born at Patan in Gujarat on Jyeshtha Shukla Dwadasi in 1166. He ascended the throne at the age of 11 after his father’s death. Because of his minor age, his mother Karpurdevi looked after the administration of the state. He fought against his cousin brother Nagarjuna who was the son of Vigraharaj IV. Prithviraja marched against him with a large army and laid a siege to Gudpura (present Gurgaon). Nagarjuna was defeated and he had to run away. Prithviraja III started his ‘Digvijaya abhiyan’ (conquest of all quarters) and assumed the title of Bharateshwar Samrat (Emperor of India). He conquered Mahoba, Sagar, Lalitpur, Orchha, Jhansi, Sirswagarh and surrounding areas. He also strengthened the Tomar capital of Delhi named Lalkot and built a citadel fort named Qila Raipithora, The fort of Hansi was also built by him. He made many matrimonial alliances with the prominent families to strengthen his rule. He defeated the Afghan ruler Muhammad Ghori in the First Battle of Tarain in 1191 CE, a village in Karnal District, Haryana. He is immortalized by the famous eloping with Rajkumari Sanyogita, daughter of Raja Jaichand Rathore of Kannauj. In year 1192, he again met Muhammad Ghori of Ghazni at the same ground of Thanesar. This time he was defeated and according to Muslim scholars, was killed. Some Indian scholars believe that Prithviraj was taken to Ghazni and blinded. Later he killed Ghori with the help of shabdbhedi ban vidya. He married 1stly to Bundela Raniji Jamwati Bai, daughter of Raja Mohanpal Singh of Orchha, 2ndly to Dahima Raniji, sister of Chamundrai Dahima, 3rdly to Dahiya Raniji or Parbatsar, 4thly Yaudheya Raniji, 5thly Pundir Raniji or Nagaur jagir, 6thly to Padhir Raniji, daughter of Nahadrao Padhir of Mandore, 7thly to Rathore (Gahadwal) Raniji Sanyogita, daughter of Raja Jaichand Rathore of Kannauj and had issues.

  • Maharaj Agniraj Govindraj Chauhan, Ruler of Ajmer, eldest son of Agniraj Prithviraj Chauhan. After the loss of the Chauhan forces in the battle of Tarain in 1192, to give peace to his subjects he paid heavy tributes to the sultan and offered rich gifts to Qutb-ud-din Aibak and he was allowed to rule Ajmer. This act of his was taken as disgraceful and unpatriotic by his uncle Hariraj. He attacked and captured Ajmer and Govindraj was forced to change his seat of power to Ranthambore.   • Maharajadhiraj Ghadapati Prataplankeshwar Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Prahlad Chauhan, ruler of Ranthambore. Rebelled against the Sultanate rule and declared himself Independent Agniraj Chauhan of Ranthambore. He also got back the titles of his ancestors. He did not rule for long and died o f injuries sustained during a lion hunt. Married and had issues.

  • Maharajadhiraj Ghadapati Prataplankeshwar Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Virnarayan Chauhan, ruler of Ranthambore, died 1226. In early age faced the invasion of Sultan Iltutmish of Delhi with the help of his uncle Vagbhatt Chauhan. He was invited to Delhi by the Sultan for diplomatic negotiation which was a trap and was poisoned there. He died childless and was succeeded by his uncle Vagbhatt Chauhan.
  • Maharajadhiraj Ghadapati Pratapalankeshwar Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Vagbhatt Chauhan, ruler of Ranthambore. After the loss of Ranthambore following the death of Agniraj Prahlad, he went to Malwa and carved a principality for himself. In the year 1236 noticing the opportunity after Sultan Iltutmish’s death, he gathered a large force and attacked to reclaim Ranthambore and captured it back. Defeated Ulgha Khan (later Sultan Balban) twice in his attempt to capture Ranthambore. Minhaj called him “the greatest of the Rais, and the most noble and illustrious of all the princes of Hindustan”. Married and had issue.

  • Maharajadhiraj Ghadapati Prataplankeshwar Parmeshwar Agniraj Sri Hammir Dev Chauhan, ruler of Ranthambore. Succeded his father Agniraj Jaitrasimha overtaking Kunwar Surtan and Kunwar Viram. Last and most famous of Chauhans of Ranthambore. Not very long after him ascending to the throne, he started, ‘digvijaya’ or conquest of all the quarters. He also assumed the title of Dev. He first defeated Ajuna, the ruler of Bhamarasa, and then exacted tribute from the fort of Mandalgarh. Striking southwards from here, he reached Ujjaini (Ujjain) and Dhara (Dhar) and defeated the Parmara ruler Bhoja. From here he turned northwards, and reached home passing through Chittor, Abu, Badnore, Changa, Pushkar, Maharashtra (Marot), Shakhambri, Khandilla, Champa, Karkarala and Tahangarh. He also performed Koti-yajna (similar to Ashwamedha yajna) twice. He defeated Jalal-ud-din Khilji, Sultan of Delhi and his successor Ala-ud-din Khilji. Ala-ud-din attacked Ranthambore again in 1301 and this time seeing eminent defeat,the royal ladies performed Jauhar and Hammir Dev severed his head to the idol of Shiva in the fort.   • Agniraj Maharaj Bariar Singh Rajkunwar (1834-1858), 31st Maharaj, born 1824, died 1858, was one of the leaders of the revolt of 1857 in Sultanpur. He married Rajkumari (Maharani) Rajishwari Devi of Handai near Allahabad. He died in battle of Ughadpur near Sultanpur. After his death, Maharani sahib fought 2 battles and won, but British besieged the capital fort and captured the kingdom, the grand Princely State was demoted to a Zamindari and the capital fort destroyed.
  • Agniraj Maharaj Jokha Singh Rajkunwar (1858-1902), 32nd Maharaj, born 1853, died 1902, fought alongside British in Anglo-Afghan war.
  • Agniraj Maharaj Harikishun Singh Rajkunwar (1902-1945), 33rd Maharaj, born 1900, died 1945, was a supporter of Gandhi and refused to take British army title during the Non-Cooperation movement lead by Gandhi Ji. He fought alongside allied forces in World War II. He married Kumari (Maharani) Rama Devi (died .1994) of Hanjapur of Pratapgarh. He died o f heart attack.

  • Agniraj Maharaj Chandra Bhushan Singh Rajkunwar (1945-1992), 34th Maharaj, born 1945, died 1992. Graduate and gold-medalist in Horticulture from Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi). Served as deputy director of UPHDB (Avas Vikas Parishad), he was also one of the chief planner of Asia’s largest colony Indira Nagar in Lucknow. He was popularly called Malik Sarkar by the people of the area since he held a large stretch of land and allowed people to work on it and provided livelihood to many people. He also donated a large stretch of land and provided jobs to 100’s of unemployed people in UPHDB. He married Maharani (Rajmata sahib) Kamlawati Devi ji of Akbarpur.
