Present Head/Ruler

Raja Shri MAHESHWAR CHAND KATOCH, 6th Raja of Nadaun since 1970. Born 1952, educated at the Doon School, Dehradun. Married Rani Suman Lata Devi, daughter of Ram Dev Sharma of Bangana District Una, H.P

Short History

In 1823, Nadaun was granted by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to Jodhbir Chand, the younger son of Raja Sansar Chand II of Kangra.

During the Katoch insurrection, Jodhbir assisted the British in holding the Nadaun Tahsil, capturing several of the rebels. His services were acknowledged by Mr. Barnes, then Deputy Commissioner, in a letter to the Commissioner. His son, Prithi Singh, fought during the Mutiny in Central India, winning the Order of Merit and receiving a khilat of Rs. 500. For his good services generally, Jodhbir was made a Knight Commander of the Star of India in 1868 and was granted a salute of seven guns as a personal distinction. Other concessions were made to him in the form of rights to muafi escheats within his jagir. Thus, by his own merits, he became one of the foremost of the Hill Rajputs, standing high in the esteem of the district officers. Upon his death in 1873, the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Sir Robert Henry Davies, expressed regret at losing a friend ‘whose upright and honourable character had secured the respect and esteem of all, while he had discharged the duties of his position to the entire satisfaction of Government.’
