Estates within Alwar

Rao Kalyan Singh had five sons, all of whom had issues, and it is interesting to note that they all had their respective estates in the Alwar territory and are called panch thikanas.

Bara Kotris;1A term which was borrowed from Jaipur, where it is applied to the families who are the nearest relatives of the ruling Chief. are the families sprung from panch thikanas.

All members of these twelve houses take their seat in the Darbar on the right of the Ruler. Among these houses, succession is by primogeniture, with suitable provision being made for younger sons out of the income of the estates.

Among the families belonging to other classes the estate is generally divided in equal or unequal portions among the sons, but the eldest succeeds to the rank and dignity.

The Jagirdars are required to keep at their own expense a certain number of horsemen who serve the State for six months in each year, but some are exempted from this liability except on emergencies.
